Trevor James SG RXS
The Trevor James RAW Signature Custom Alto Saxophone is a professional level instrument that combines a vintage look with modern performance. With its unlacquered finish, solid build, and versatile tone, it’s designed to stand out both visually and musically. This review breaks down its looks, mechanical features and sound quality.
Looks
The raw XS is an expertly crafted, professional level instrument with a unique unlacquered design for a natural patina and vintage aesthetic. While structurally identical to other raw models, the factory applied tarnish has been manually removed, showcasing a "lived in" look.
Mechanics
The build quality is exceptional, with ribbed construction, level tone holes, a large bell, and thoughtful ergonomics like adjustable features and bevelled touch pieces for comfort. The keywork boasts durable double arms on key cups, domed pearls for smooth transitions, and precise mechanics supported by proper point screws, ensuring long term reliability and reduced maintenance costs. Its compression resistant synthetic felts provide a smooth and quiet action, a standout detail.
Sound
Sonically, the raw XS strikes a balance between vintage warmth and contemporary brightness, offering depth, clarity, and power across the range. Compared to renowned models like the Yamaha YAS62 and Selmer Balanced Action, it blends vintage richness with modern versatility, delivering a moreish tone that appeals to a wide range of players.
Personal opinion
This Sax has been my main alto for a few years and has been my amazing for all gigs shows and jam sessions. I have to say it is an amazing horn. It manages to provide a unique sound while also being extremely adaptable depending on how it is played. It has the sound and quality of a professional alto, potentially comparable to a Selmer, but also boasting a lower price of around £2000.
I definitely recommend this sax as a starting point when looking to buy a professional horn.
